NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE (NICU)

The NICU at Apple Saraswati has 40 bed capacity. It is a level IV tertiary referral centre with an availability of bedside diagnostic facilities like Echocardiography, Ultrasound, video EEG. The department is supported with highly trained Consultants, Medical officers & nursing staff to take of extremely critical babies admitted in NICU. It has advanced dedicated neonatal ventilators & a high frequency ventilator.
The NICU has three sections namely, High Dependency Unit (HDU), Step Down NICU & a Septic Unit. The neonates referred to NICU are categorically admitted in respective Units based on the nature of disease and the level of care required.

The Technology

NICU has 25 Ultramodern Incubators (Zeal Medical) 05 dedicated neonatal ventilators ( Maquet, GE, Siemens) , LED Based Phototherapy unit, Transport neonatal ventilator, Transport Incubator.

The Team

The NICU has team of 02 fulltime Neonatal Intensivists, 03 Paediatricians and highly trained Medical Officers and nurses. At least one Intensivist and other supporting staff are always present in NICU at all shifts including night shift. This ensures an immediate attention is provided to patients requiring emergency care at any time of day and night.

Diseases treated & Procedures Available

NICU department caters to various neonates requiring invasive and noninvasive medical management. These broadly include, premature neonates with congenital anomalies, respiratory distress requiring respiratory support, sepsis with multi-organ failure, neonates with cardiac ailments, birth asphyxia, aspiration pneumonia etc.

Academics

As a part of updating the knowledge of Medical officers & nurses in NICU, regular lectures by Intensivists are conducted. These lectures covers various subjects like, training in assisting invasive procedures like intubation, nutrition to neonates, aseptic precautions in NICU, training in use of various advanced equipments like high frequency ventilator, invasive monitors etc. The staff is also trained about educating mothers in taking care of premature babies.

We have also applied for DCH course run by CPS Board. The training of these candidates will also start in near future.
